Conversation in the Library
Conversation in the Library is a tribute to memory, dialogue and shared heritage. The two volumes bring together seventy scholars from fifteen nationalities and a wide array of disciplines, exploring the history, cultures and intellectual traditions of the wider Eastern Mediterranean and Rhodes.
In a region where the past is often recounted through competing national narratives, Conversation in the Library seeks another path. It brings perspectives into conversation, privileging historical complexity over division and shared experience over inherited boundaries. Its language is deliberately one of openness and mutual recognition, avoiding interpretations that too often turn a common past into a source of estrangement.
The language through which we speak about history is not merely a matter of words; it helps shape how we understand one another in the present and imagine our common future. In the Eastern Mediterranean, where histories, cultures and communities have long intersected, the ability to speak across differences is essential to building trust and sustaining peace.
Conversation in the Library is an invitation to see cultural heritage not as the possession of one nation or community, but as a shared inheritance and a meeting ground. It affirms the belief that dialogue, a serious engagement with the past and, ultimately, mutual respect can help transform the memory of historical divisions into a foundation for a more peaceful and convivial future.
The 2026 Vasiliki Karagiannaki Edited Book Prize Committee has awarded an Honourable Mention to Conversation in the Library, Volumes I & II (Istanbul; Rhodes: Hafız Ahmed Ağa & Ahmed Fethi Paşa Foundation, 2025).
The Hafız Ahmed Ağa & Ahmed Fethi Paşa Foundation is grateful to the Modern Greek Studies Association and the 2026 Vasiliki Karagiannaki Edited Book Prize Committee for recognising both the publication and the cultural heritage it seeks to preserve and bring to wider attention.
